Recently, in a shocking incident in Chapell Hill, North Carolina, three people – a man, his wife and her sister, were shot dead. While the investigations are still on, the prime motive behind their murders is said to be their faith. They were all Muslims, and someone was not okay with that. Another side to the story is that it was an argument over parking that escalated into the worst possible outcome. What’s more, the media outlets in US mostly reported the incident after people on Twitter started talking about it.
The sad fact is, it is not easy being an “outsider” in certain places, more so if you’re a brown-skinned Muslim in a western country. Yes, Islamophobia exists.
To tackle it, a Muslim man in Toronto decided to carry out a social experiment. He blindfolded himself, stretched his arms wide open and stood in a busy square next to two placards that read – ‘ I am a Muslim. I am labelled as a terrorist’ and ‘I trust you. Do you trust me? Give me a hug.’
This is what happened.
