We can’t know what India was really going through in it’s final year under British Raj. Only those who were there to witness it, know what it was like. And to know it from a political stand point seems unimaginable, unless someone was on the political side of things.

This very rare coloured video from 1947 showcases India from a British viewpoint as well, including the last viceroy Lord Mountbatten; his own words of how life in India was, close to the fall of the Raj.

Not just that, it also features Nehru’s “tryst with destiny”. Yes, the sun was shining on a new India.

August 15th, 1947: The British Raj came to an end and to be honest, I don’t know if you will feel happy about the fact that India won its freedom or be saddened by the millions who went through the horrors of partition.

As the narrator puts it, “While Delhi & Karachi were celebrating, Central Punjab was burning.”
