There’s a new spat in Twitterville. Ace journalist Barkha Dutt has (once again) locked horns with economist Rupa Subramanya. They have been fighting, accusing, maligning, slandering each other for the past couple of days.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, there was a crazy verbal onslaught happening right under your noses. (Or in front of our noses, depending on how much time you spend on Twitter). We bring to you the highlights from this week’s biggest online fight. Feel free to bring out the popcorn.
Here, the ladies can be seen dissing each other for a book blurb. Yes, you read that right.
Justifications are yours! Btw u didnt think I was a “presstitute” when you asked me to write a blurb for your book? https://t.co/hmpL7HDf6n
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 5, 2016
Your obsessive tweets about me wont change fact that you implored me (knowing this) for blurb to sell your book https://t.co/70NJmb2WJo
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 11, 2016
Subramanya letting the world know that she doesn’t call people ‘presstitutes’:
Never called u/any individual a presstitute. So just like u imputed malice yday, you’re again imputing something false https://t.co/sSPgpfOsVQ
— Rupa Subramanya (@rupasubramanya) March 5, 2016
Dutt was tweeting about the threats she had recently received:
@dna just wondering why you say its a “claim”- would you like to come and see the record of calls? rather a loaded, biased word?
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 8, 2016
And, along came S:
Your twitter bio says you’re a wannabe lawyer @BDUTT . Am sure you know claims until verified are as such. Hope this helps. @dna
— Rupa Subramanya (@rupasubramanya) March 9, 2016
Dutt wasn’t having any of it:
Your sexism foolish & predictable @rupasubramanya cops have transcripts of threats, images of phone no,all verified https://t.co/lqTzmHn1kD
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 10, 2016
Subramanya clarifying her stance:
FTR, my interactions with @BDUTT over the years matter of public record. Notice how I’ve behaved towards her & how she has towards me.
— Rupa Subramanya (@rupasubramanya) March 10, 2016
… and then we come across something like this. All in a day’s work:
Feminist sees sexism when there’s none & when it’s staring you in the face repeatedly, apparently don’t respond? pic.twitter.com/pY2SRpK7H2
— Rupa Subramanya (@rupasubramanya) March 11, 2016
Dutt giving it the LOL treatment:
ha ha. an LoL moment https://t.co/bKPhZkMFBw
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 10, 2016
Stuff Dutt finds disappointing:
@rupasubramanya what’s “disappointing” is your wanting solidarity after your racist remarks but not giving any to other women.Happy trolling
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 10, 2016
@rupasubramanya what’s “disappointing” is your blatant hypocrisy to seek blurbs from people to sell your book, then trash them online!
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 10, 2016
Subramanya wasn’t going to let it die:
A blogger threatened with legal consequences for criticising @BDUTT 26/11 coverage. See SS. https://t.co/ZUv8PcUOVz pic.twitter.com/q1j1JpX1zg
— Rupa Subramanya (@rupasubramanya) March 11, 2016
Here @BDUTT tells her side of Chaitanya Kunte story to @scroll_in . Make what you will. https://t.co/Ghf88LhcLe pic.twitter.com/qDlQAhqpD0
— Rupa Subramanya (@rupasubramanya) March 11, 2016
One last (?) potshot:
Ha ha what a cop-out. Did a whole book on India & such poor ‘research’- Get some self respect Rupa Ji. https://t.co/Tp4VXSoVce
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 11, 2016
Just when we thought Subramanya was going to retire hurt:
Btw, @bdutt your recent attempts to paint me as some sort of hideous person are transparent, have not gone unnoticed. Extremely disappointing
— Rupa Subramanya (@rupasubramanya) March 5, 2016
Dutt definitely wasn’t letting that book-blurb bit die. Ever.
@rupasubramanya what’s “disappointing” is your blatant hypocrisy to seek blurbs from people to sell your book, then trash them online!
— barkha dutt (@BDUTT) March 10, 2016
Basically, writer Vivek Dehejia, one of the co-authors of the book in question, had to be called in for reinforcement:
@BDUTT This is a non sequitur, Barkha. The book, of which I was a co-author, was back in 2012. What’s the relevance today? @rupasubramanya
— Vivek Dehejia (@vdehejia) March 10, 2016
@BDUTT Checking emails,I recall @MeruGokhale @BhopalHouse @rupasubramanya & I concurred we should invite you to write a blurb for the book.
— Vivek Dehejia (@vdehejia) March 10, 2016
While the ladies were tearing each other apart, Twitter was busy doing what it does best – commenting. Half-baked knowledge is such a great weapon in the hands of the uninitiated:
.@BDUTT गोविंदा और लालू यादव का फिर से झगड़ा 😂 @rupasubramanya
— Sri Free Rofl Gandhi (@RoflGandhi_) March 5, 2016
@gajee Obviously @rupasubramanya has flustered @BDUTT to the point where she isnt thinking clearly, causing her to make random accusations
— Bob Biswas (@InternetLully) March 10, 2016
Our favourite reaction award goes to:
@rupasubramanya @BDUTT Public record? Please spare the public from your spats
— Victor (@Veluru) March 10, 2016
@rupasubramanya @BDUTT I don’t know history, but it looks both of you look childish on twitter. I expect better from you guys.
— Victor (@Veluru) March 10, 2016
What we have come to learn from all this is that a pre-nuptial for a blurb should also be brought into being.
